BEHIND THE HORIZON

Behind the horizon, In a sunset sight, there is is a secret. The big wings of the wind that carry something untold Sometimes bewilder me when I think about them. It’s a bell or may be something else. I guess it’s an additional secret in the dawn’s coming. There is a candle mixed with the wind’s breeze. That secret with the additional secret is a dove or an eagle. Behind the horizon, in a sunrise sight, there is a dream of a kid’s toy. Any thing might come from behind every horizon. The sun always rises and always sets. Behind the horizon only some things go, but always dawns come.

Minister of Education

The Minister of Education majored in Finance
So requires a dosser to translate her casework
Into something resembling her main occupation
In the field of Finance and not Education
Unfortunately this ignores the topic of Administration
For something the Minister is more familiar
Such as keeping the numbers to minimum levels
Translation: more cutbacks in public school spending

When the Minister of Education proposes legislation
She uses her staff to speak to representatives
Who know nothing related to the field education
So they look to the Minister for informed reflections
As she looks to the Prime Minister to tell her what to do
But the Prime Minister did not major in Finance
Instead he employs her knowledgeable for assistance
Translation: she reads the Prime Minister a dictionary of education

So everybody pretends to know what they are doing
When they are not doing it.
Representative Democracy

Besides
What would be the point
In appointing
A person
With the skill sets
-criteria
-talents
-dedication
Into a position
In which
They knew
what they were doing?

That would be
………
To Efficient

Dog days

at the railroad-crossing
music from the saloon
with only a stray dog for company
waiting to see
faces pressed against windows
as the train passes

a huddle of dark figures
on a pathway through the trees
from the crazed varnish of a winter-landscape
and dogs yapping at their knees
and even if they would
nowhere to hide
waiting for the conversation to subside

Love is around the bend

The Length Of the Curve
it deceives me.
The depth of the sea
it surrounds me.
The waves here and their
lap around me.
Your face in the pool
it reminds me.

Impotence To Love

Hands are closed
from giving and sharing
Eyes are blind
to see the other side.
Ears are deaf
to others’ pleas and cries.
Feet refuse to walk
another sacrificial mile
Such is the human heart
made impotent to love.

LOVE FROM A TO Z

The gentle dispersion of atoms
Of a body alone.

This autumn moment of complete perfect sadness
Radiation in the heart
Bringing to the eye
The world instantly entire,

Oh so lovely circling
Brave sun gilded orb
Provocative and sad
Containing all:

A moment, a dot
To be loved utterly
By the lover who remembers
But no longer knows fear.

So the huge restless roar of the torrential wind
Brings suddenly, fancifully
Waves of soft snow.

Can’t Be Monday

I lay in bed with one eye open
As my dreams all crashed in ruins
Wondering just who to blame
For choosing such horrendous tunes

The DJ’s evil voice came through
Welcoming us to the day
I’m sure he is a terrorist
To bring such misery my way

Forget the work that must be done
Forget appointments that were made
Upon this mattress I will stay
Close the curtains, draw the shade

I’m not gettin’ out of bed
Someone set the clock ahead
It can’t be Monday, no-sir-ree
It’s just one great conspiracy

If I get up it’s sure to happen
Something bad will come to be
As soon as my feet hit the floor
An accident’s awaiting me

Should I need another reason
I’m not feeling up to snuff
My back is sore, my head is aching
You know I sure am feeling tough

Were a doc to look me over
I know what he would recommend
Bedrest he would strictly order
Until this day comes to an end

If anything needs getting done
Tomorrow will be soon enough
Postpone the shower and the shave
Breakfast and the other stuff

I’m not gettin’ out of bed
Someone set the clock ahead
It can’t be Monday, no-sir-ree
It’s just one great conspiracy

You Cannot Think the Book of Life Will Close

You cannot think the book of life will close.
Opportunity must seem a right.
Most days contain a trace of paradise,
Kindling the hope that God is nice
Instead of just or loving or pure light.
Prepare for what is not what you propose:
Perhaps you think your prayers will suffice,
Unburdening your heart with hunger slight.
Repentance takes much more than you suppose.

You Pray Not for Yourself Alone but All

You pray not for yourself alone but all.
One never chooses sin in isolation.
Most evil is not merely personal.
Kindness looks for common inspiration.
In every act there is community.
Perhaps one would prefer it were not so.
Placing each’s guilt on all may be
Unfair, but then each righteous soul must see
Reflections of itself in every woe.

Revenge Is Often Taken in the Mind

Revenge is often taken in the mind.
Open wounds untreated tend to bleed.
Some who else would be both good and kind
Hate others in the thought, if not the deed.
Have mercy, then, upon yourself, and clear
Away the anger twisting you inside,
Sanctifying for the coming year
Heart and spirit, cleansed of pain and pride.
As you ask forgiveness, so forgive,
Nor need you lose your honor with your fury.
All find their just reward in how they live,
Held to account by a less partial jury.

Rosh Hashana Opens to the Page

Rosh Hashanah opens to the page
On which is writ, for good or ill, our fate.
Still wrestling with angels, we engage,
Harrowing our hearts, our destined state.
However, "we" encompasses us all,
As though we were but droplets in a wave
Suspended on its journey to the shore,
Hard put to any single droplet save.
And so we pray not only for ourselves,
Nor only for our family, friends, or tribe:
All must be our congregation, else,
Having thus lost hope, we won’t survive.

Remember the Utility of Shame

Remember the utility of shame,
On which in part our decency depends.
Such sentiments evolve to serve our ends,
Harrowing the mask behind the name.
How apt that to ourselves we be revealed
As time pauses in between the years,
Season of incantatory tears,
Harrowed for the sins we have concealed.
Allow your shame full access to your heart,
Nor flinch from bearing witness to your part,
As only what is treated can be healed.

Return Each Year to Test the Ancient Waters

Return each year to test the ancient waters,
Opening the unaccustomed heart.
So may you retain a Jewish soul,
Having given it its yearly outing.
Here your parents meet your sons and daughters,
A junction wrought by well-established art,
Severing the spirit from the role,
Holding in its golden words your routing.
All you’re left with is what really matters,
Needing, to be whole, to be a part,
At least this once a year a Jew of old,
Holy in this place despite your doubting.
